How To Mend Holes In T

Make do and Mend. Once upon a time that was a favourite saying but today we live in a throwaway society that discards torn, worn or damaged clothing rather than attempting to mend it. Many would argue that T- shirts can be bought for next to nothing so that there is little or no incentive to mend them. But what if the T- shirt that needs mending just happens to be your favourite one that cannot be replaced. If the T- shirt has come apart at the seams then the split in the seam should be fairly simple to mend. Choose a thread that closely matches the garment and thread your needle. When you begin to mend a split in the seam then you need to make sure that you take the stitching a little bit lower than the depth of the split so that the repair incorporates a small amount of the fabric that sits directly below the seam. If you mend a split in the T- shirt seam by just over-sewing the split edge to edge then the repair will soon come apart and you will be back to square one. If you are a dab hand with a sewing machine then you can turn the T- shirt inside out and mend the seam by machining along the inside if it, again taking in a little extra fabric to make sure that the repair is successful. Often deodorants and body sprays can rot the fabric underneath the arms, that can be frustrating. The body of the T- shirt is still in good condition and the underarms are usually tucked away out of sight so these holes are worth repairing. It is possible to mend a hole under the arm of a tee shirt. Look around for an oddment of fabric, if the T- shirt is made from cotton jersey then it is advisable to mend the hole with a similar stretchy fabric. To mend the hole under the arm cut out a neat piece of fabric that is marginally larger than the hole itself. Turn the T- shirt inside out and tack the piece of fabric over the hole to secure it into place. Once you have tacked the patch into place then turn the T- shirt back to the right side. Take a needle and thread it with a matching thread and then begin to mend the hole by making tiny stitches around the outer edge of the hole, you need to work the needle through the fabric of the T-shirt and the patch at the same time. As you sew around the hole you will notice that the patch starts to semi-blend into the actual body of the shirt, the mend will show but the hole will be repaired. There are times when it is virtually impossible to make a successful repair and unless you can cover the hole with a badge or an embroidered patch then maybe it is time to recycle the T- shirt. The soft jersey fabric makes good dusters, floor cloths and rags for the car. The garment may have a hole but the fabric still has its uses.
